EMERGENCY RELIEF

Help us provide support for earthquake and tropical storm relief, recovery, and rebuilding efforts at our regularly supported program sites. Thankfully, all of our direct contacts in Haiti are safe and unharmed. Our team members and collaborators on the ground in Haiti are currently working to assess any impacts to their sites, the families they serve and their communities and identify specific needs.

We will continually update this page with information as we receive it.

PROJECT HISTORY

Aigle School

The LWCF involvement in Haiti began in 2010 when two current board members met while assisting in relief efforts after that country’s devastating earthquake.  While progress has been made in reconstruction since the earthquake and the subsequent cholera epidemic, needs for adequate shelter, clean water, nutrition, health care, and education remain staggering.

SAKALA

The SAKALA Project is located in the notorious slum of Cité Soleil in Port au Prince. Started in 2006, SAKALA blends sports with youth leadership education, after-school activities, gardening, computer instruction, community development, and peace education in a safe environment to empower youth. The focus of the project is to divert young slum residents from the influence of gangs by offering a safe place for them to experience positive and peaceful alternatives. SAKALA is staffed by a determined team of young men and women dedicated to improving the lives of at-risk children and ultimately to improving their country.

LWCF is fully behind SAKALA’s effort to channel the energy and creativity of the young slum residents in productive, meaningful, and fun ways. Please help SAKALA show these youngsters that living in a slum does not have to determine their future.

OUR IMPACT

Aigle School

The school is growing – there are now 139 students and 13 staff members. Mr. Leme is starting a fundraiser to build a third-grade classroom. LWCF has assisted in the construction of a kitchen and additional rooms to the school, and with books and instructional materials. LWCF plans to remain involved with Eagle School and hopes to conduct teacher training in the near future.

SAKALA

LWCF has provided computers and funds for educational and sports equipment. Through a grant from Belizean Grove, LWCF has started an arts and crafts venture in which the young participants create art and useful crafts made from recycled material. They sell these objects through the Sakala gift store. A few budding artists have emerged through this project, and all participants are enjoying the challenge of creating beauty from trash
