In September of 2024 my family tragically and unexpectedly lost my brother Jerry Olcsvary at the young age of 54. He was so many things in this world; devoted husband, caring father, loving son and to me he was an incredible role model. As his younger brother, I looked to him for love and guidance to make it through this sometimes challenging world. He and my father were two of my best friends and heroes. I would be putting it lightly saying that there is a tremendous void in our family since he left us in the physical form.

Jerry was also an extraordinarily talented musician. One Christmas in high school he received a bass guitar as a gift. I didn’t tell him at the time, but it amazed me that he was able to pick the instrument up and learn to play the bassline to his favorite songs just by listening to them. He eventually went on to play in bands during his college years and 20s. Our music tastes were very different; he loved groups like The Cure, New Order and Radiohead while I gravitated to the sounds of Wu Tang Clan, Gang Starr and Public Enemy. Although we sometimes butted heads musically, I introduced him to artists like Busta Rhymes and Eminem while he opened my musical palate to groups like Rage Against The Machine and Living Colour.

My brother Jerry and I

When Jerry became a father, he passed on the love of music to his daughters, and they eventually both joined the high school band. Jerry was very involved in the parent organization that helped the band fundraise and travel to band competitions. He may not have been gracing the stage strumming his bass, but he was still able to be involved with music through his children.

After Jerry’s untimely passing, I wanted to do something to honor him and create something that would allow his spirit to live on. I wanted to do something that involved two of Jerry’s gifts; music and helping people.

I was introduced to LWCF through my good friend’s mother, Dorothy Schwartz. I began sponsoring a student in Kenya, and was also introduced to Sherry Fine. I am an early childhood educator and also an author of a self-published children’s book about mindfulness and the power of positive thinking. A few years ago, I was able to donate several books to one of LWCF’s schools. To have my book in Africa in this school was beyond amazing!

I was able to see firsthand the amazing things that Sherry, Dorothy and all the incredible people involved with LWCF were doing for young people. After a few brainstorming Zoom sessions, I came up with the “Jerry’s Music For The World” music program. My goal was to provide a music program for children and have my brother’s love for music and helping people live on.

“Jerry’s Music For The World” started in Tanzania and is providing children with musical instruments and a program to teach them and hopefully foster a love for music like my brother had. Seeing the videos and photos of the student’s having fun making music and experimenting with the instruments warmed my family’s hearts.

My hopes are that this is a sustainable program that can continue long term, and eventually make its way to all of the schools within LWCF. This way my brother’s love for music and helping people can truly live forever!
