BOD NOTE: A donation of computers and related equipment David Winograd and Regina Vogel has made a huge difference at Dorothy Schwartz Community Centre. Because of their generosity, we are now able to have what is designated as a Junior Secondary School, which requires a computer lab. Besides being dedicated sponsors of Kenyan students, David and Regina have been cheerleaders for the school’s success. Thanks to Regina, who continues with her dedication to the computer lab’s success, for writing the following tribute to one of LWCF’s Heroes, David Mark Winograd.

David Mark Winograd led a dynamic and varied career, from working as a taxi driver and off-Broadway actor to becoming a professor and voice actor. In 2000, he earned a doctorate in Distance Education from Arizona State University, contributing significantly to the evolution of virtual education. He shared his passions for technology, literature, theatre, and art with his children, Ian Winograd and Lily Pantaleo, along with his beloved grandchildren: Cole, Eloise, Simon, and Felix.
David shared a life of joy and adventure with his beloved partner, Regina Vogel, traveling the world and treasuring every moment together with their two beloved dogs Lily and Cookie.
He enjoyed exploring Apple technology, listening to smooth jazz and contemporary rock, watching and analyzing movies, reading across all genres, and engaging in spirited discussions.

After meeting Dorothy Schwartz, both David and Regina began sponsoring high school students at DSCC, a school named in Dorothy’s honor, in Nairobi, Kenya. His dream of going on a safari became a reality in July, 2024. They visited DSCC and spoke to Isaac about the school. David’s questions automatically went to technology, asking about how many computers the students had access to (two, both owned by teachers), wi-fi services, computer storage area, cost, etc. When they returned home, he said to Regina “I’m going to make that (the computer center) happen.” In less than two months David passed away. Regina made sure that the computer center became a reality, just in time for the new school year.
David’s intelligence, kindness, and eagerness to share his knowledge left a lasting impact on those who knew him. He is deeply missed by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.
This entire computer initiative has truly been a game changer at our school. It’s something we are incredibly proud of and deeply grateful for. Thank you so much for linking us with wonderful people like David and Regina whose generosity is helping to shape the future of so many young minds here.
