My name is Vivian McManus and I am a 16 year-old high school student living in Massachusetts! Over the past 2 summers, I have worked as a science camp counselor at a local museum teaching children ages 5-10 about the environment and the importance of taking care of our planet! With the funds, I knew I wanted to do something special that would simultaneously educate children while making their day to day lives easier. My sister, Elyse McManus, immediately got in contact with Sherry Fine! Sherry encouraged my dreams, helping me to establish a garden at the Sherry Fine Academy where children could grow vegetables while learning about the importance of sustainability. From there, the project took off! The sustainable gardens have been extremely successful and have made a difference in the lives of wonderful students!
In August of 2024, the Living Water Children’s Fund Youth Board launched the Organic Garden Project, an initiative aimed at supporting nutritional and environmental education for children all over the world. Since its creation, we have been able to build gardens and plant food crops at 6 of Living Water Children’s Fund schools around the world!
These gardens have become much more than just a source of food for students. Students of all ages, and even children as young as five years old, have been actively involved in planting and cultivating vegetables and plants in the gardens. This hands-on approach teaches valuable skills, while fostering a deep appreciation for the environment as well as proper nutrition.
Informed by both the local climate and school leadership, each garden has been designed to be tailored to the needs of each school. Some schools grow fresh vegetables that can be eaten immediately after harvesting. Other schools grow vegetables and plants that are suitable for sale, with proceeds being reinvested in the school. We hope to grow the Organic Garden Project so that we can create more gardens at a larger number of Living Water Children’s Fund orphanages and schools. Please consider supporting the Organic Garden Project so that schools in need are provided materials and support to create their own sustainable gardens!
